Icing On The Weekend
When I enter details for all the yoga events on this website I’m always struck by how many different styles of yoga and meditation there are. So many! It’s exciting to see and I’m itching to experiment. (And to keep Learning with a capital L because that’s the best kind of class, don’t you think? When you leave wearing invisible black-rimmed glasses, carrying an invisible clipboard, sporting a row of Bic pens in your invisible front pocket and looking like you know deep stuff. Yes? Exactly.)
For me, distance from the studios plays a big part in expanding my horizons. And until recently it’s also put the kibosh on any weekend classes. (Actually if I’m completely honest brunch has also played a part. I live for weekend food.)
But things have changed up around here because my studio opened a second one that is fairly near to where I live and all of a sudden weekend classes are back on the menu.
It’s possible they didn’t do it just for me, however I am immensely grateful. Not only is the pressure off during the week, as I know I can miss an early morning and go later in the day without worries about traffic or parking, there’s a renewed spontaneity that’s been missing. What’s better than a beautiful Yin to finish off your Sunday, or a Vinyasa to start your Saturday, that you don’t *have to go to?
It’s like a treat and a big-fat-tick-in-the-good-choice-column all rolled into one.
I may even have to change allegiances. Word in the changing room is that there are two and a half schools of thought on this. Those hard-core bendy types that practice all day, every day, all over the place without breaking a sweat. Let’s call them teachers. (Let’s keep our facts straight and call them hard-core bendy teachers.) Then are those who practice most weekdays and wouldn’t dream of coming in on the weekend. (Because it’s the weekend!) And the half part of the equation are those chilled yogis who practice whenever, wherever, without the slightest twinge of should or must about their yoga whatsoever. (Damn them.)
While it may not be an official style of yoga (yet), at the very least Weekend Yoga deserves capital letters. It’s right up there with Learning and Brunch.
I’d love to know if anyone else feels like they’re accumulating brownie points when they make the effort to go to class outside of their normal yoga schedule… Do you practice regularly at a studio on the weekends? Is it a treat to fit in a class or do you consider Saturday and Sunday time-off?

*Yes, I know nobody has to go to a yoga class. Unless they have some lingering issues about, oh I don’t know, many things. (Also, how many asides does this post have? Sorry about that.)

Love this! Yes, I always feel a bit righteous when I do a weekend yoga class. But then I feel a bit disappointed in myself when I miss my regular weekday morning classes. One weekend class though i feel can be equal to 2 weekday classes. Just because it is unscheduled (at least in my diary) it is extra special.
I completely agree with your maths on this. Let’s consider it official!
