25/50 Halfway To Halfway
1. Before I was 25
I’d been born somewhere else, been adopted by a new Dad, lived overseas, come back to NZ and a new family, broke my back, pelvis and other little bits, lost my Dad, lost my brother, taken a paedophile to court and got a conviction, become a journalist, travelled, become a vegetarian, then a vegan who ate blocks of crap chocolate to negate not eating anything else, got mugged in Germany, thought I’d boarded a flight to Amsterdam but ended up in Paris, got asked to leave the UK, got asked to leave the States, went to university and got married in a Zambesi piece called Honey Babe Ballet Dress.
It never crossed my mind to go to yoga.
2. After 25
I had the Most Beautiful Baby on Earth, suddenly realised I was an adult, baked, felt inferior to school mothers, found my other whole family, lost our financial security, our home, husband worked overseas, we stayed here, there was more cancer, two baby cats who ruled the roost, ballet classes, ballet shows, horse riding with allergies, no holidays, no treats, more losses of the best people and the Most Beautiful Baby on earth still came downstairs asking us to stop laughing so she could get to sleep.
I went to my first ever yoga class for a ‘stretch’. Couldn’t walk the next day.
3. Yoga
Everything. Every loss, every hurt, as life continues is held in love. My yoga comes with me off the mat. It makes me more me, more of the good, I think.
Yoga is part of every breath I take. I’ll be going for the next fifty years at least.
That’s so far for me. Ish.
How’s it going for you?! Are you under 25? Or over? I’d love to know how yoga figures in your life and when you first practiced…

I love you Jane. Learnt a lot more about you reading this blog xx not surprised you were asked to leave so many countries tho!
Oh Mak, I love you too xxx Although I was terribly surprised to be asked to leave. What with overstaying my visas and all…
This was so great. I found yoga at 24 after living in the UK for a year working in the film industry for 4 years. Through a career change and diplomas in therapeutic massage and neuromuscular treatment yoga came as an obvious addition. As an ex ballet dancer it felt pretty natural to the body but so much better for my mind. It’s been 17 years now and no looking back. Thanks for sharing Jane. You totally crack me up daily. ?
Aw thank you! And wow what an awesome list of careers. Love you’ve been practicing for 17 years! I calculate my mind needs this forever! xxx
