24/50 Welly, Welly Get In My Belly

1. Vivian Street isn’t where it used to be

I have a terrible sense of direction (TSD) and I can say without doubt that it is a genetic fault. My mother’s fault.

We drove around for a good hour and a half to find me something I’d eat for lunch due to my apparent food issues. We did a lot of left-hand turns (much more than necessary due to us supposed to be going right) and going round in circles to find ourselves about, oh, 10 minutes from home.

After meeting up with a beautiful friend in town afterwards I couldn’t find my way out. I went up Vivian Street, then down and before realising that I wasn’t on Vivian Street at all. Also, so many one-way streets! Going the wrong one-way I was headed!

I once had a flat in London from which it took me exactly five minutes to walk to work. On my first morning instead of crossing the road and going straight ahead I turned left using my TSD and walked through Regents Park. An unnecessary step and one that made me 40 minutes late. Did it again the next morning.

I don’t know either.

This is dedicated to Google Maps but unfortunately not sponsored by them. Even though we’re like family.

2. Rental cars

They smell like air freshener but you know there’ll be no surprises with car bits coming off or running out of petrol.

True, the radio is tricky to tune so you end up listening to a lot of ‘80’s metal (not my thing) and the lights are on full-beam which you only find out when you keep getting flashed at but otherwise they’re a change. And change is fun.

Just one thing. Remember what the vehicle looks like. It’s possible to confuse this large silver truck-like one with the white hatchback you hired last time and you can easily end up desperately clicking your remote in the hope a car, any car, opens.

Could happen to anyone.

3. Old haunts

I drove past a friend’s flat from circa 1992 today that I used on days I didn’t want to spend at Uni. It looked exactly the same. I wonder if today’s tenants gather in the kitchen like we did and put the oven on for heat.

I went to a spruced-up old pub that is a million years away from how it once looked. I shared a slice of raw cake and a pot of chamomile tea. That made me smile. Definitely not on the menu back in the day.

There’s been a lot of TV One.

Hope your night’s a good one. And you get where you’re going.

PS. Would love it if you took a moment to vote for me in the Weleda Global Garden completion. I’ve never entered anything like this before so my campaigning is probably a bit clumsy and I don’t have badges. But here’s the link! Thank you!
